Algerian News Agency responds to French media leaks targeting Algerian officials

Ana Algeria: The Algerian News Agency (APS) accused French circles of “continuing to manage Algerian-French relations through organized leaks with utmost improvisation and clumsiness, without showing the slightest effort to rectify or adjust the course.”

The APS reported that the French newspaper L’Express, citing its sources, stated that “French authorities may be preparing a decision to freeze the assets of Algerian officials in response to Algeria’s refusal to accept its nationals subject to deportation orders from French territory.” It noted that these leaks aim to “freeze the properties of Algerian officials in France by preventing them from accessing their real estate or other assets.”
Paris’s threat to target part of the Algerian community residing in France signals a serious escalation in this crisis. The APS added that France’s relationship with Algeria “has never sunk to such a low level of management, nor has it ever reached this degree of amateurism and improvisation. It has never before touched such a peak of lack of seriousness. Once again, these practices bear the distinctive mark of French officials who see Algeria only as fuel for their political careers.”
Regarding this specific issue, the APS stated:
“Algeria, its people, government, and institutions, says to these individuals: Go ahead and implement what you’re talking about!”
It added: “Those truly behind these threats, which elicit nothing but contempt and indifference from Algeria, must realize the truth: they are not addressing the real Algeria, but an Algeria that exists only in their imagination, the one they describe with terms like ‘the regime,’ ‘the authority,’ ‘the influential elites,’ or ‘the ruling class.’ This Algeria exists only in their delusions and wild fantasies.”
The APS continued: “The real Algeria, not the one feeding their fantasies, is entirely different. It is the Algeria that requested France to activate judicial cooperation mechanisms regarding cases of illicitly acquired assets, without receiving any notable response. It is the Algeria that sent 51 international letters rogatory to French justice, which have gone largely unanswered. It is also the Algeria that requested France to extradite several individuals convicted of corruption, embezzlement, and looting of public funds, without receiving any significant cooperation.”
The APS concluded its message to Paris, stating: “With such negligence, the authorities concerned place themselves in a position of complicity with these illegal practices. If it’s about cleaning the Augean stables, let France start by cleaning its own stables first, which might afford it some credibility and seriousness, of which it is in dire need at this particular moment.”
Relations between the two countries have been in a diplomatic crisis nearing a breaking point for nearly a year, following France’s departure from international legality by endorsing Morocco’s proposal in the Western Sahara issue in July of last year. The crisis has seen several stages where tensions reached their peak, including the arrest of the Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal in mid-November 2024. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison by the Dar El Beida court in Algiers, with his retrial scheduled for June 24. Recently, the two countries have also engaged in mutual expulsions of diplomats.
Amid this iron grip, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has exploited the crisis for domestic political calculations.
