As Eid al-Adha approaches, the Algerian government is stepping up efforts to ensure the availability of sheep at affordable prices. During the Council of Ministers meeting held this Sunday, April 20, 2025, under the chairmanship of President Tebboune, an important decision was made: the selling price of sheep imported for the occasion was officially set at 40,000 Algerian dinars.

This price, proposed by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, aims to ease the economic pressure on citizens, particularly in the face of soaring prices on the local market.

On March 9, Tebboune ordered the exceptional import of one million head of sheep for the Feast of the Sacrifice. This unprecedented program is part of an emergency effort to strengthen supply and protect the purchasing power of Algerian households.

This Sunday morning, the first shipment of 15,000 sheep from Romania docked at the port of Algiers. This is the first import operation of this type carried out by Algeria in over thirty years. It marks the launch of a large-scale logistics plan, led by public authorities.

A government program to curb soaring prices

According to a press release from the port administration, this shipment is part of a special program implemented by the government to stem the surge in livestock prices on the national market. Further deliveries are expected in the coming days, from Romania and Spain, via five strategic ports: Algiers, Oran, Jijel, Skikda, and Annaba. This distribution aims to ensure balanced geographical coverage across the country.

According to sources within the Ministry of Agriculture, the coming weeks will see the arrival of new batches, with distribution arrangements to be announced very soon. The partnership with European suppliers, particularly Spanish ones, is also expected to strengthen, according to information relayed by the Spanish agri-food agency “Efeagro.”

This government initiative is widely welcomed as a pragmatic measure to guarantee all citizens access to sheep for Eid under fair and regulated conditions, while combating speculation and excessive price increases.

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, the first shipment of 15,000 sheep from Romania docked at the port of Algiers.

This large-scale operation was launched by the Algerian authorities to meet a traditional and sensitive need: to enable families to purchase their Eid sheep at a reasonable price. This is just the beginning of a broader plan aimed at importing one million head, as ordered by the President of the Republic.

Behind this arrival lies a veritable logistical ballet, led by the public group Agrolog, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Maritime Fisheries.

It was just after midnight when the APUS, a livestock carrier specially designed for transporting livestock, docked. On board were 15,000 Romanian sheep, carefully packaged for a multi-day journey across the Mediterranean.

Indeed, the arrival of this first shipment was meticulously prepared. Quay 22/4 at the port of Algiers was designed to allow unloading in optimal conditions. In addition, a green corridor was established to facilitate the passage of trucks dedicated to transporting animals, thus reducing the risk of stress or contamination.
