Heavy Thunderstorms Expected in Eastern Provinces and Northern Sahara

Weather alert warns of rainfall exceeding 60 mm and unstable conditions through Saturday morning

Algeria’s Meteorological Office issued a special weather bulletin on Thursday, warning of significant weather disturbances expected to begin on Friday. Several eastern inland provinces and areas in the northern Sahara are forecast to experience heavy thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

According to the bulletin, the first group of affected provinces includes Djelfa, Ouled Djellal, Biskra, Batna, Oum El Bouaghi, Khenchela, and Tébessa. Rainfall is expected to range between 30 and 40 mm, with local peaks possibly exceeding 60 mm, especially in the Aurès region. The alert is valid from Friday at 3:00 p.m. until Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

A second warning was issued for El M’Ghair, Laghouat, M’Sila, Bordj Bou Arreridj, southern Sétif, Mila, Constantine, Guelma, and Souk Ahras. These areas may receive rainfall between 20 and 30 mm, possibly exceeding 40 mm locally. This alert is in effect from Friday at 3:00 p.m. until Saturday at 3:00 a.m.

The Meteorological Office has urged citizens to exercise caution, particularly in low-lying areas prone to flash flooding.
