The National Gendarmerie services in Annaba have apprehended a hospital-university professor working at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital Center, suspected of demanding a sum of money in exchange for performing a surgical operation. The scandal erupted following a formal complaint filed by a patient, who claimed to have been subjected to pressure from the practitioner.

According to the complaint, the doctor allegedly demanded a “moyenne” — in other words, an undue sum of money — to carry out an operation that falls within the scope of his normal hospital duties. Upon notification, the Research and Intervention Brigade (BRI), under the regional Gendarmerie group, launched an in-depth investigation under the supervision of judicial authorities.

Arrest Under High Vigilance and Impending Prosecution

A meticulously planned operation enabled the authorities to trap the suspect. He was arrested in flagrante delicto while preparing to receive the agreed-upon sum. Incriminating evidence was seized during his apprehension, strengthening the suspicions against him.

The investigation was conducted in strict compliance with legal procedures, with the approval of the public prosecutor’s office. The suspect has been placed in custody and will soon be presented before the public prosecutor. He will face serious charges, including solicitation of an undue advantage by a public official and abuse of function.

This case raises renewed questions about medical ethics and corruption in the public health sector. It highlights the urgent need to strengthen oversight mechanisms in hospitals to ensure fair and accessible healthcare for all.

A Case That Raises Questions and Calls for Vigilance

Beyond the facts themselves, this affair challenges the ethical foundations of the medical profession. When a practitioner, entrusted with a mission of care and trust, crosses the line, the entire system falters. In a sector as sensitive as public health, corruption not only threatens the integrity of institutions but can also endanger lives.

This scandal underscores the importance of enhanced oversight within hospital establishments and the need for a culture of transparency and accountability. Citizens, for their part, must be informed of their rights and encouraged to report suspicious practices without fear of reprisal.

More than ever, this case calls for collective vigilance to ensure that hospitals remain places of care, not arenas for bargaining.
